Back in April I wrote an article about checks, plaid, and houndstooth and I truly believe that this has evolved into one of the biggest trends for this fall and winter. I managed to over look one pattern though, tartan. Tartan consists of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in an array colors and most commonly affiliated with the Scottish culture. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about this pattern is Charlotte and Trey's tartan wedding in Sex In The City. I know that this reference is slightly outdated, but it's so classic. A couple days ago, if you tuned in to watch the Victoria Secret fashion show, which collaborated with Balmain, you would've seen models Jasmine Tookes and Karlie Kloss looking like a vision in tartan. Jasmine Tookes wore thigh high lace up boots with side panels of tartan and Karlie Kloss was clad in plaid with a Kimono and a matching tartan lingerie set.
While walking through Midtown in New York I noticed a women wearing red, black, and white tartan trousers, paired with a white chunky cable knit sweater, a candy apple red peacoat, and black patented loafers, she looked like a dream. The best way to include tartan into your wardrobe is by pairing it with the colors you find in the pattern, just like that stylish Midtown women.
